In Marrakesh, the Women in Sustainability, Environment, and Renewable Energy (WiSER) initiative, led by UAE sustainability champions Masdar and the Zayed Sustainability Prize, has successfully concluded its latest WiSER Cares program. Titled “Adaptive Agriculture: Innovations in Technology and Practice for Water-Scarce Communities,” the initiative aimed to equip women with essential skills for sustainable community development.
Dr. Lamya Fawwaz, Masdar’s Executive Director of Brand & Strategic Initiatives and WiSER Program Director, highlighted the course’s impact on water access issues, stressing Masdar’s commitment to empowering young women globally. The program gathered 18 participants, including WiSER Pioneers and Moroccan professionals, focusing on climate-resilient agriculture amidst challenges like water scarcity and soil degradation.
Collaborating with local institutions such as UM6P and INRA CRRA, the course featured lectures, practical exercises, and site visits to farms and research centers. Participants engaged in workshops on planting, harvesting, and solar energy utilization for water conservation, enriching their understanding of adaptive agriculture strategies.
Tosin George, Solar Operations Consultant and 2024 WiSER Pioneer, expressed enthusiasm about applying newfound knowledge in her community to address climate challenges. The course culminated with visits to the Museum of the Water Civilization, emphasizing traditional water management and community engagement.
Dr. Redouane Choukrallah from UM6P underscored the importance of empowering female leaders to tackle climate issues, emphasizing WiSER’s role in building resilient, food-secure communities.
WiSER, launched in 2018, supports women aged 25-35 through its Pioneers program, offering educational workshops and networking opportunities. Rooted in UAE’s commitment to women’s empowerment and aligned with global net-zero goals, WiSER continues to drive sustainable change worldwide.
