Three companies have been shortlisted as winning bidders to develop the Khazna Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Project in Abu Dhabi, according to the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). The three proposals are from ENGIE, a consortium comprised of EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power (KOWEPO), and a consortium comprised of Jinko Power and JERA, for the development of the new 1,500-megawatt (AC) Khazna Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Project. This project will bring 1,500 megawatts (AC) of new solar power to the UAE, powering approximately 160,000 homes. The chosen bidders will collaborate with EWEC to build what will be the company’s fourth large-scale solar project.
By adding Khazna Solar PV to the grid, the winning bidders will help increase EWEC’s solar capacity to a projected total of 5.5 gigawatts (GW) AC, further establishing Abu Dhabi as a solar energy hub in the region.
The three companies emerged as finalists after EWEC received initial interest from 27 companies and consortiums, with 19 advancing through a qualification stage. Following technical and commercial evaluations, these winning bids were selected based on criteria that included both expertise in renewable energy development and competitiveness in pricing and implementation.
In the coming months, the selected companies will work with EWEC to finalize a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), expected to be signed by the second quarter of 2024. This agreement will define the terms of the project, from construction and grid integration to long-term energy production. This collaboration will support the UAE’s Clean Energy Strategic Target for 2035, with Abu Dhabi aiming to supply 60 percent of its power from renewable and clean energy sources by then.
