SkyPower Global, a UAE-based company, has secured a contract from the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) to establish a 200-megawatt clean energy plant in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The initiative, called as the DRC Green Giant project, will be constructed in four phases, with the initial phase carrying a price tag of $200 million (equivalent to Dh734 million) and anticipated to generate 6,000 job years. This was disclosed by Kerry Adler, the President and CEO of SkyPower, as per reports.
This inaugural 200MW installment marks a pivotal stride towards realizing the 1,000MW Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) inked with Congo’s state-owned utility, Societe Nationale d’Electricite (SNEL). Adler projected a timeline of 18 to 24 months for the project’s full operationalization, emphasizing its anticipated direct and indirect contribution of $700 million to the GDP of the African nation.
As per President Félix Tshisekedi of DR Congo, it aims to significantly augment the country’s clean energy production, with forecasts indicating a potential $2.3 billion stimulus to the nation’s GDP and the creation of approximately 30,000 job years.
Amadou Wadda, Senior Director of Project Development and Technical Solutions at AFC, expressed confidence in the alliance and lauded SkyPower’s extensive global expertise in large-scale solar endeavors, aligning with AFC’s mission to bolster energy accessibility in Africa through renewable sources.
Furthermore, Kerry Adler underscored the significance of the agreement, highlighting AFC’s pivotal role in advancing renewable energy solutions across the African continent.
