The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), UAE has funded a new solar power plant in the Union of the Comoros. The project was inaugurated recently and is located in Moroni, the capital city. The plant has a capacity of 6.3 megawatts. It was built with financial support worth AED 25.7 million, or about US$7 million.
The solar power project is designed to supply electricity to Moroni and nearby areas. The power generated will be connected to the national grid using medium-voltage lines. This move is expected to provide stable and renewable energy to the local population.
The inauguration was attended by the President of the Union of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani, and the UAE Ambassador to Comoros, Jumaa Rashed Al Remeithi. The event marked the start of using solar power to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and to improve energy access in the country.
According to the ADFD, the project will help reduce carbon emissions. It will also support local development by improving electricity access and creating new job opportunities in the energy sector.
The solar plant is one of several projects ADFD has supported in Comoros. Since 1979, the UAE fund has provided AED 439.4 million (about US$119.6 million) in loans and grants to Comoros. These projects have supported different sectors such as energy, healthcare, education, and transport.
In addition to this project, the UAE has also supported small, clean energy activities in other regions of the country. This includes solar-powered water pumping systems and small-scale rooftop solar installations in rural schools and clinics in Comoros. These smaller efforts are helping to expand access to energy in hard-to-reach areas.
