TA’ZIZ has awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract worth $1.7 billion (AED6.2 billion) to SAMSUNG E&A for the construction of a methanol plant in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Al Dhafra region, Abu Dhabi. The plant will have a production capacity of 1.8 million tons per year and will be the first methanol production facility in the UAE. It is expected to be completed by 2028 and will be powered by clean energy from the grid. The project is part of TA’ZIZ’s chemical production plans in the region.
TA’ZIZ plans to produce 4.7 million tons per year of chemicals by 2028. This includes methanol, low-carbon ammonia, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride monomer, and caustic soda. Some of these chemicals will be produced in the UAE for the first time. The methanol plant is expected to contribute to the expansion of the local chemical industry.
Other renewable energy and industrial projects are being developed in Abu Dhabi. The Al Dhafra Solar PV Project, located south of Abu Dhabi city, will have an installed capacity of 2 gigawatts. It is expected to be one of the largest single-site solar farms in the world. The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the first commercial nuclear energy project in the UAE, has an installed capacity of 5.6 gigawatts and supplies electricity to the national grid. The Noor Abu Dhabi Solar Plant, with a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, is another large-scale solar project in the region.
In addition to solar and nuclear power, Abu Dhabi is investing in hydrogen production. The ADNOC-Hydrogen project is exploring blue and green hydrogen production for local and international markets. The Masdar City Green Hydrogen Project is testing hydrogen production using renewable energy sources.
