Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) are working on new energy projects to expand power generation and improve electricity transmission in the UAE. These projects support the country’s goal of reducing carbon emissions and increasing the use of clean energy.
TAQA has signed a long-term agreement with EWEC to develop the Al Dhafra Open-Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) plant. This facility will produce 1 gigawatt (GW) of electricity. TAQA will fully own and operate the plant, while its subsidiary, TAQA Transmission, will build the infrastructure needed to connect the power to the grid.
EWEC is also partnering with Masdar on a renewable energy system that will combine solar power with battery storage. The system is designed to provide 1 GW of continuous electricity throughout the day and night, making it one of the largest projects of its kind.
The collaboration between TAQA, EWEC, and Masdar will involve a total investment of AED 36 billion. Most of this funding will go toward power generation from both renewable and conventional sources. The rest will be used to upgrade electricity transmission networks to ensure stable energy supply.
TAQA’s CEO, Jasim Thabet, highlighted the company’s role in providing reliable electricity while supporting cleaner energy solutions. He also pointed out TAQA’s involvement in Masdar, which focuses on renewable energy projects.
EWEC’s CEO, Ahmed Ali Alshamsi, stated that these projects will help meet the UAE’s future energy needs and support industries that rely on artificial intelligence and digital technologies. He emphasized the importance of modern energy systems in balancing sustainability and efficiency.
These new developments are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the UAE’s energy infrastructure while moving toward a cleaner and more efficient power supply.
