The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has announced the list of qualified bidders for the Group 1 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects, which will have a combined capacity of 2,000 MW/8,000 MWh. These projects will be implemented across four locations in Saudi Arabia under a build, own, and operate (BOO) model.
The first project, Al-Muwaih BESS, will have a capacity of 500 MW/2,000 MWh and will be located approximately 180 kilometers northeast of Taif in the Makkah Province. The second project, Haden BESS, also with a capacity of 500 MW/2,000 MWh, will be situated approximately 93 kilometers northeast of Taif, in the same province.
The third project, Khushaybi BESS, will have the same capacity and will be located approximately 6.7 kilometers south of Al Khushaybi and 45 kilometers south of Ar Rass in the Qassim Province. The fourth project, Kahafah BESS, with a similar capacity, will be located approximately 135 kilometers south of Hail in the Hail Province.
SPPC has divided the qualified bidders into two categories: those qualified for managing and technical roles, and those qualified for managing only. Companies qualified in both managing and technical roles include Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), TAQA, ACWA Power, Akaysha Energy, China Energy Overseas Investment, China Power Engineering Consulting Group, China Southern Power Grid International, Cox Energy EPC, Electricité De France (EDF), Envision Energy, FRV-X Renewable, International Power (IPSA), JERA NEX, Jinko Power, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Marubeni Corporation, Pro-Power Investment, Samsung C&T, SPIC Huanghe Hydropower Development, Total Energies Renewables, and X-ELIO Energy.
Companies qualified for managing only include Al Gihaz Holding, Al Jomaih Energy & Water, Alfanar, FAS Energy KSA, GCL Intelligent Energy, Gulf Energy Development, Nesma Renewable Energy, POSCO International, Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), Saudi Electricity Company, Shell Overseas Investment, and Sumitomo Corporation. Each project will operate under a 15-year Storage Services Agreement (SSA) with SPPC.
