The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has named 11 developers eligible to participate in the sixth round of renewable energy projects. These projects are part of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), led by the Ministry of Energy.
This round includes a total capacity of 4,500 MW, divided between wind and solar projects. Among these is the Dawadmi Wind Independent Power Producer (IPP) project, which will produce 1,500 MW and be built in Saudi Arabia’s Central Province. Four additional solar projects, with a combined capacity of 3,000 MW, are also included in this phase.
The prequalified developers for these projects represent a mix of international and regional firms. International companies on the list include EDF Renouvelables, Total Energies, Marubeni, Sumitomo, Jera, Spic Huanghe Hydropower, Power China, and Sembcorp Utilities. Regional firms include Masdar, Kahrabel (an Engie subsidiary), and Alfanar Company.
The Dawadmi Wind IPP and the solar projects are intended to advance Saudi Arabia’s efforts to diversify its energy sources. These projects are expected to contribute to reducing reliance on liquid fuels in electricity generation. According to the Ministry of Energy, the NREP’s goal is to supply 50% of the country’s electricity through renewable energy by 2030.
The NREP has been introducing renewable energy projects in phases, each focused on increasing the role of wind and solar power in the national energy mix. The projects under the sixth round are the latest addition to these ongoing developments. SPPC stated that these projects will involve independent power producers working under long-term agreements to supply electricity to the national grid.
