Safeer, a joint venture formed by TotalEnergies and Zahid Group, has agreed to build a solar power plant for Golden Chicken in Saudi Arabia. A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was signed to move the project forward.
The solar system will have an installed capacity of 5.18 megawatt-peak (MWp) and 4.13 megawatt alternating current (MWac). It is expected to produce over 13 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity per year.
The setup will involve 8,160 photovoltaic (PV) modules. Inverters will be used to ensure energy from the panels is properly converted. A solar tracking system will be installed, allowing the panels to adjust with the sun’s position during the day for better energy generation.
The solar plant is projected to help reduce around 6,710 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The energy generated will be used to support the operations of Golden Chicken, reducing its dependence on conventional energy sources.
In addition to this project, Saudi Arabia is seeing several small-scale renewable energy initiatives. In Al-Kharj, small solar-powered irrigation systems are being used on farms. These systems have capacities between 10 kilowatts (kW) and 50 kW.
In remote areas of Asir and Tabuk, solar panels have been installed on public school rooftops. Each system ranges from 15 kW to 20 kW, providing backup electricity where grid access is limited.
Other projects include solar car parking shades around Riyadh, which generate clean energy while offering shaded areas for vehicles. These installations typically have capacities from 30 kW to 100 kW.
The Safeer project with Golden Chicken adds to the growing list of renewable energy projects in Saudi Arabia. These projects are part of a broader effort to diversify energy sources and manage environmental impacts.
