Sharjah Road and Transport Authority (SRTA) has launched the first phase of electric buses to be used in the favour of the Climate Neutrality 2050 initiative. “The ten electric buses will be running on three intercity lines to promote green public transportation toward achieving environmental sustainability”, SRTA said.
It follows Abu Dhabi’s September 12 launch of green buses. The green buses in Abu Dhabi operate on both electricity and hydrogen. This was discussed by Anan Alamri, head of section at ITC’s Alternative Sustainable Mobility, Public Transport Affairs Sector, during ‘The Journey to Net Zero Forum’.
Abu Dhabi buses run on Route 65 connecting Marina Mall to Shams Boutik in Al Reem Island. Since these are electric as well as hydrogen-run vehicles, they do not emit harmful pollutants like normal fossil fuel buses. Hydrogen run buses emit only water vapor while the general public transport vehicles emit a number of hazardous pollutants which are hazardous for human health.
Future usage of renewable energy sources will cut carbon emissions by a high margin from using diesel. In Abu Dhabi, WAM says, “the annual carbon dioxide emissions are likely to decrease by more than 100,000 metric tonnes.”
The strategies are part of a broad scheme in the UAE aimed at reducing carbon footprints by the public transportation system and sustainable long-run goals.
