A partnership between Aljomaih Energy and Water Company (AEW) and TotalEnergies has finalized a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC). The agreement involves the construction and operation of a 300 megawatts (MW) solar power facility, Rabigh 2, in Saudi Arabia.
This project is part of Saudi Arabia’s fifth round of the National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP). The initiative focuses on increasing the role of renewable energy and gas in electricity production to reach an equal balance of 50% by 2030. This approach aims to reduce reliance on liquid fuels, as outlined in the Vision 2030 plan for economic and energy diversification. The Rabigh 2 solar plant will be managed entirely by the consortium, covering its development, construction, and operation. The plant is expected to connect to the national electricity grid by 2026.
The National Renewable Energy Programme has led to the launch of various other clean energy projects in the region. For example, EDF Renewables, in collaboration with SPIC, is building two solar farms, the Al-Masaa project with a capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) and the Al-Henakiyah 2 project with a capacity of 400 MW. Additionally, TotalEnergies is developing the 119 MW Wadi Al Dawasir solar plant, which is expected to start operations by 2025.
Saudi Arabia is also growing its wind energy capacity. The 400 MW Dumat Al Jandal wind farm, operational since 2021, was built by a consortium that includes EDF Renewables and Masdar. These renewable energy initiatives contribute to Saudi Arabia’s goal of generating 130 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, while also supporting the global shift toward clean energy.
