Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, Abdulaziz bin Salman, announced that five renewable energy projects in Egypt, involving solar and wind power, have started operations. He made the statement at the 8th Egypt International Energy Conference and Exhibition (EGYPES 2025) in Cairo. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was present at the opening.
The minister spoke about ongoing cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Egypt in the energy sector. He referred to a national energy efficiency program being developed with Egypt’s petroleum and electricity ministries. This initiative aims to apply Saudi regulatory practices and expertise while helping to enhance Egypt’s energy sector. A study is also underway to establish a joint entity that will work on making government buildings more energy efficient.
Salman highlighted major renewable energy projects in Egypt, including a large wind power project that will expand Egypt’s clean energy production. He also mentioned the electrical interconnection project between the two countries. This project will enable electricity exchange of up to 3 gigawatts, helping both nations manage energy demand more effectively. The project is scheduled for phased completion next year.
In addition to these developments, Egypt has been expanding its renewable energy capacity through various projects. The Benban Solar Park, one of the world’s largest, continues to be a key solar energy hub. The Gabal El-Zeit and Zaafarana wind farms are also growing, adding to Egypt’s wind power generation. New green hydrogen production initiatives are being explored with international partners, with a focus on using renewable energy sources for hydrogen production.
Egypt has also been working on smaller renewable energy projects. Solar-powered desalination plants are being developed in coastal and desert areas to provide fresh water. Rooftop solar panel programs are being promoted in cities to encourage decentralized energy generation.
