Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Oman has reached agreements with OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) and TotalEnergies to work on three renewable energy projects. These projects include a solar power plant called North Solar 100MW IPP and two wind farms, Riyah-1 100MW IPP and Riyah-2 100MW IPP.
The North Solar IPP will cover an area of 3 square kilometers and generate 100 megawatts of renewable energy. It is scheduled to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2026. The project will reduce annual CO2 emissions by over 220,000 tons and conserve millions of cubic meters of natural gas.
Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 wind farms will be located in Amin and Nimr West. Together, these wind projects will produce 200 megawatts of clean energy. Both are expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2026. The wind farms will collectively save millions of cubic meters of gas each year and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 740,000 tons annually.
These projects aim to contribute to Oman’s Vision 2040 and its net-zero emissions target by 2050. PDO will act as the sole buyer of power from these projects, integrating renewable energy into its operations.
Oman has also launched other renewable energy projects recently. For example, the Sultanate’s first utility-scale solar plant, the Ibri II Solar Independent Power Plant, became operational in 2021.It generates 500 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 50,000 homes. Another project, the Dhofar Wind Power Plant, became fully operational in 2019. This plant generates 50 megawatts of electricity and reduces annual CO2 emissions by 110,000 tons
