Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP), Oman’s primary authority for procuring electricity and water, has initiated the qualification process for its Al Kamil Solar Independent Power Project (IPP). The project aims to add 280 megawatts (MW) of solar energy to the country’s electricity grid through private sector participation.
The Al Kamil Solar IPP will be developed in Al Kamil Wal Wafi in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, covering a land area of 3.2 million square meters. The plant is scheduled to begin commercial operations by the fourth quarter of 2027. The estimated cost of the project is RO 85 million, and it is expected to produce 863 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy annually.
The plant’s operations are projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 282,000 tonnes per year. This initiative supports Oman’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and achieving its Vision 2040 sustainability objectives.
To advance the project, PWP has issued a Request for Qualification (RfQ) to invite interested developers. These developers are required to demonstrate their technical and financial capacity to execute the project. RfQ documents can be purchased online via PWP’s e-tendering system until December 16, 2024. The deadline for submitting qualifications is February 3, 2025. Only developers can participate in the process, as Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors are not eligible to bid.
PWP has previously overseen renewable energy projects such as the 500 MW Ibri II Solar Plant, which has been operational since 2021. The Al Kamil Solar IPP is part of Oman’s strategy to generate 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. This project is designed to increase the use of clean energy while ensuring energy security and reducing environmental impact.
