Oman has joined the Global Alliance on Green Economy (GAGE), an international platform focused on supporting countries in their shift to a low-carbon economy. The membership announcement came during the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. GAGE now includes 90 member countries, including Oman.
GAGE is an initiative by the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) launched during the World Green Economy Summit in 2022. The alliance supports its members by providing technical and financial assistance to develop green economies. It facilitates the transfer of technology, promotes green economy policies, and creates opportunities for employment. GAGE’s main goal is to help countries implement clean energy solutions and combat climate change.
The alliance emphasizes the urgency of limiting global warming. It warns that without substantial changes, global temperatures could rise by 2.8 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. Members of GAGE, including Oman, aim to strengthen international cooperation to address climate challenges and reduce emissions.
GAGE also focuses on climate planning and financing. It assists member countries in participating in carbon markets and non-market mechanisms. These efforts aim to fund and implement clean energy projects. The alliance supports members in advancing their climate action goals as outlined in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategies (LT-LEDS).
At its recent meeting in Baku, GAGE introduced a New Portfolio of Bankable Green Projects from member countries. It also invited members to propose additional projects for evaluation. These proposals are expected to align with GAGE’s focus on reducing emissions, building capacity for carbon markets, mobilizing climate finance, and enabling a just transition to renewable energy. Oman’s participation in GAGE reflects its engagement with international efforts to adopt sustainable practices and transition toward renewable energy.
