OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) has partnered with France’s TotalEnergies to build renewable energy projects in Oman with a total capacity of 300 megawatts (MW). The electricity generated will be supplied to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
The projects include three renewable energy developments: the 100 MW North Solar project in Saih Nihaydah in northern Oman, and two wind projects, Riyah-1 and Riyah-2, located in Amin and West Nimr fields in southern Oman, each with a capacity of 100 MW. Together, the projects will produce over 1.4 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually.
Ownership of the projects will be shared between the two companies. TotalEnergies will own 49 percent, while OQAE will hold the remaining 51 percent. Construction for the projects is expected to start in early 2025. Electricity generation is scheduled to begin by late 2026.
The development of these renewable projects is part of Oman’s broader efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in its power sector. Furthermore, two recently developed renewable energy projects in Oman are the Ibri II Solar Project, with an installed capacity of 500 MW in Al-Dhahirah Governorate, and the Amin Solar Plant, with a capacity of 100 MW in southern Oman. The country has set a target of sourcing 30 percent of its power capacity from renewables by 2026.
In addition to these projects, TotalEnergies has participated in other renewable energy initiatives in Oman. This includes a solar photovoltaic project developed through a joint venture with Veolia, providing power for a desalination plant in Sur.
