Oman is set to initiate the third round of tenders for green hydrogen projects in early 2025, as announced by Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom), a state-owned entity. The announcement was made during the GH2 Investor Day, an event held under the patronage of Energy Minister Salim Al Aufi, where discussions centered on opportunities in green hydrogen and its role in the global shift toward cleaner energy.
The event included leaders and investors to discuss the role of green hydrogen in global energy transition efforts. Discussions focused on improving local manufacturing, infrastructure development, and bidding mechanisms. These steps aim to strengthen Oman’s position as a producer and exporter of green hydrogen.
So far, Oman has awarded eight green hydrogen projects, which are expected to produce 1.38 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2030. The combined renewable energy capacity for these projects is planned at 34.8 gigawatts (GW). Total investments for these projects are estimated at $49 billion.
The projects are divided between two regions in Oman. Five are located in the Duqm area in central Oman, while the remaining three are in the Dhofar region in the south. These projects are designed to utilize renewable energy sources like solar and wind to power hydrogen production.
Oman has also been advancing its renewable energy infrastructure in other areas. The Amin Solar PV Plant in southern Oman, with a capacity of 105 megawatts (MW), is one of the first large-scale solar projects in the country. It supplies renewable power to industrial operations. Additionally, the country is exploring large wind power projects to complement its hydrogen ambitions.
