King Juan Carlos of Spain inaugurated the Gemasolar Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant in Seville, marking the launch of the world’s first commercial-scale power plant capable of providing uninterrupted electricity generation from the sun, 24 hours a day. The plant, with a capacity of 19.9 MW, is a pioneering project by Torresol Energy, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi’s Masdar (40%) and Spanish firm SENER (60%).
The €171 million project was financed by major European financial institutions, including Banco Popular, Banesto, ICO, and the European Investment Bank. This landmark achievement underscores the growing importance of renewable energy technologies.
Gen Shaikh Mohammed, a key figure from the UAE, highlighted the significance of this project in advancing global energy security and sustainable development. He praised the strong ties between the UAE and Spain, noting that the successful launch of Gemasolar is a testament to the fruitful cooperation between the two nations. Shaikh Mohammed emphasized that the project represents a successful collaboration that could inspire future innovations in energy.
Spain, known for its leadership in renewable energy, has been increasing its renewable energy share, which was 12.5% in 2009 and is projected to reach 20% by 2020. The Gemasolar plant reflects Spain’s commitment to advanced renewable energy technologies.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, spoke about the company’s dedication to developing and deploying cutting-edge renewable energy solutions alongside traditional energy sources like oil and gas. Enrique Sendagorta, President of Torresol Energy, expressed the company’s goal to advance concentrated solar power technology as a sustainable energy source and contribute to environmental protection.
The Gemasolar plant not only represents a significant technological milestone but also highlights the role of international collaboration in addressing global energy challenges.
