Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar has joined forces with TotalEnergies to explore a new green hydrogen project aimed at producing methanol and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The project’s goal is to cut emissions in tough-to-decarbonize sectors like aviation and maritime by using green hydrogen and captured CO2 from industrial sources.
This agreement builds on a successful test flight held during COP28 in December 2023, which showcased the potential of converting methanol into SAF. This initiative is a crucial part of Masdar’s efforts to advance SAF and supports the UAE’s broader sustainability goals.
Under the UAE’s General Policy for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, there is a target to have 1% of aviation fuel supplied to national airlines at UAE airports come from locally produced SAF by 2031. Additionally, the UAE aims to develop a regulatory framework for SAF to support the industry’s long-term viability.
The agreement aligns with Abu Dhabi’s Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy, which aims to promote low-carbon hydrogen as a key energy source. This policy supports the UAE National Hydrogen Strategy, which aspires to position the UAE as a leading global producer of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.
Masdar, established in 2006, has been pivotal in advancing the UAE’s sustainability agenda. The company has been involved in over 40 countries and aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100GW by 2030 while becoming a leading green hydrogen producer.
