GEMS Education and Positive Zero have signed an agreement to install solar power systems across 23 schools in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi. The project includes rooftop solar panels, carport solar installations, and solar-powered bus parking areas. The total installed capacity will be 12.7 megawatts peak (MWp), producing 21.25 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually. This energy output is enough to power 2,000 homes for a year. The installation is expected to be completed by early 2026.
As part of the project, Positive Zero will finance the solar installations through a long-term leasing model, requiring no upfront investment from GEMS Education. The agreement builds on previous solar projects between the two companies, including a solar installation at GEMS Founders School in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.
Masdar City continues to expand renewable energy projects. The Masdar Solar Photovoltaic Plant, with a capacity of 10 MW, supplies power to the city’s buildings and research facilities. A separate 1 MW rooftop solar project has been installed across various buildings within Masdar City.
Other renewable energy initiatives in Masdar City include a 500-kW solar carport system providing shade and electricity for electric vehicle charging stations. A 200 kW off-grid solar system is being used to power public lighting in certain areas. A 150-kW solar-powered water desalination unit is operational, supplying clean water while reducing energy consumption.
Masdar City is also testing battery storage solutions. A 2 MW lithium-ion battery system has been installed to store excess solar energy. A pilot project for hydrogen energy, with a capacity of 300 kW, is under development to explore hydrogen as a storage and fuel source. These projects contribute to increasing renewable energy use within Masdar City.
