Masdar Capital, the private equity arm of Abu Dhabi’s leading renewable energy company Masdar, has announced a strategic partnership with the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ) to establish a new renewable energy project platform. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalized during the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi.
This partnership, based on equal share investments, focuses on commissioned solar and wind projects across OECD nations, with particular emphasis on North America and Europe. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, highlighting its role in diversifying energy sources through sustainable practices.
“Masdar Capital’s collaboration with DBJ through the renewable energy project platform signals a clear cooperation between our two countries that are actively partnering to diversify our energy mix through renewable energy,” stated Dr. Al Jaber. He further explained the strategic timing of the partnership amidst current financing challenges in the renewable energy sector, underscoring its potential for stable returns.
Masdar Capital, known for managing substantial investments in clean energy, views partnerships as integral to its business strategy. The platform aims to invest in minority equity stakes in operational solar and wind assets, leveraging established technologies to ensure sustainable returns.
Initially, the platform targets assets with low sovereign risk, identifying a pipeline of over 1GW in solar and wind projects that align with its investment criteria. Masdar Capital, managing over $540 million in clean tech funds, has previously collaborated with Japanese investors and institutions on various sustainable energy initiatives.
This initiative further supports Masdar’s commitment to the Sustainable Energy for All initiative, reinforcing its role as a global leader in renewable energy investments. The partnership with DBJ reflects Masdar’s strategy to collaborate with experienced partners to drive innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.
