Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced new orders for its Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business. The contracts are for projects in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and India. In Saudi Arabia, the company will construct a 380kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) that includes associated Reactors and hybrid GIS Bays.
In the UAE, the contract involves setting up a 220/33kV grid station in Abu Dhabi, along with related infrastructure work. L&T has not disclosed the exact financial details of these orders but has categorized them within the range of INR 25 billion to INR 50 billion ($286 million-$573 million).
Beyond large infrastructure projects, Saudi Arabia has various smaller renewable energy initiatives that contribute to the country’s energy transition. These projects, though less publicized, play a role in diversifying power generation. The Layla Solar PV Plant in Al-Aflaj Governorate is a 10 MW installation that feeds into the local grid.
On Farasan Island, a 500 kW solar plant provides electricity to the island’s residents, reducing dependence on traditional fuel sources. In Wadi Al-Dawasir, a 5 MW solar power project supports energy needs in a local industrial zone. Agriculture-focused initiatives also exist, such as the Al-Jouf Agricultural Solar Initiative, which uses solar power for irrigation systems. Wind energy is also being explored through the Turaif Wind Pilot Project in the Northern Borders region, which serves as a test site for future wind power development.
While large-scale renewable projects attract attention, smaller projects across different regions contribute to energy diversification and local sustainability efforts. These initiatives, though less covered, align with the broader strategy of increasing renewable energy generation in Saudi Arabia.
