Iraq, a prominent OPEC producer, has plans to enact a law specifically tailored to the renewable energy sector. This progressive move comes hot on the heels of the nation’s recent allocation of multiple solar power projects, signaling a pivotal shift towards sustainable energy practices in a region majorly reliant on oil.

The Parliament’s Electricity and Energy Committee has affirmed its commitment to advancing this legislative agenda by convening various stakeholders to solicit their insights on Iraq’s inaugural renewable energy law. Through separate engagements with key officials, the committee aims to gather diverse perspectives to inform the drafting process, ensuring a comprehensive framework that addresses the unique needs and challenges of the renewable energy sector.

In a statement disseminated by official media channels, the committee emphasized the imperative of proceeding with the enactment of this legislation to effectively regulate and facilitate renewable energy projects and activities within the country. Such a legal framework not only establishes clear guidelines and protocols but also instills investor confidence, fostering a conducive environment for sustainable energy initiatives to thrive.

Iraq’s strategic decision to venture into renewable energy represents a paradigm shift, considering its status as a major player in the global oil market, boasting the fifth-largest oil reserves worldwide. Despite its substantial hydrocarbon wealth, the nation recognizes the pressing need to diversify its energy portfolio, mitigating risks associated with overreliance on fossil fuels while aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

The recent awarding of solar power contracts to TotalEnergies of France and other foreign firms underscores Iraq’s commitment to embracing renewable energy solutions. With a cumulative generation capacity of approximately 7.5 gigawatts (GW), these projects mark significant milestones in Iraq’s renewable energy journey, laying the groundwork for future endeavors aimed at harnessing its abundant solar resources.

By leveraging its vast renewable energy potential, Iraq not only stands to achieve greater energy security and environmental sustainability but also catalyze economic growth and job creation in the burgeoning renewable energy sector.
