Hyundai, in partnership with its UAE distributor Juma Al Majid Company, has delivered two new hydrogen fuel cell buses to Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC). These buses are part of the Green Bus Programme, which focuses on sustainable public transportation in the UAE capital.
The Green Bus Programme aims to assess and implement hydrogen and electric-powered buses. It evaluates technologies to provide cleaner transportation options for residents, visitors, and commuters in Abu Dhabi. The programme also collaborates with international manufacturers and government bodies to ensure the solutions are effective and suitable for the local environment.
In addition to these newly delivered hydrogen buses, Abu Dhabi had previously introduced its first hydrogen-powered public bus in January 2023. That bus was launched under a joint project between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, and Abu Dhabi’s ITC. The bus operated as a pilot project to study the feasibility of hydrogen-powered public transportation in the region.
Hyundai’s hydrogen buses, Elec City FC and Universe FC, are now operating as part of the expanded programme. Elec City FC is running on City Route 65, while Universe FC operates on Regional Route 160. The programme, which includes both electric and hydrogen buses, will continue until the end of 2025.
Hyundai’s involvement in this initiative supports the development of a hydrogen-powered public transport system. The company had previously launched hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in other markets, and its ongoing efforts in the UAE are part of its broader strategy to advance hydrogen technologies.
The Green Bus Programme also includes training Emirati professionals in hydrogen and electric bus operations. This involves practical training opportunities, including abroad, to develop local expertise in managing sustainable transportation systems.
