Gotion High-Tech plans to build a gigafactory for electric vehicle (EV) batteries in Morocco. The construction is set to begin in June 2026. The total investment for this project is approximately $1.24 billion.

The gigafactory will be powered by a 500-megawatt (MW) wind power plant developed by ACWA Power. This plant will also include a 2,000-megawatt-hour (MWh) energy storage system. ACWA Power and Gotion Power Morocco have entered into a Joint Development Agreement to work on this wind power facility. The total cost of this agreement is about $800 million.

This gigafactory will be the first of its kind in Morocco. It will start with a battery production capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year and aims to expand to 100 GWh in the future. Reports indicate that the project could see a total investment grow to $6.5 billion as it develops.

The project is part of Morocco’s efforts to boost its renewable energy capacity and promote the electric vehicle industry. The wind power plant will supply energy to the factory and support Morocco’s renewable energy targets.

ACWA Power has been involved in various renewable energy projects recently. Notably, it is developing the 2,060 MW Noor Midelt solar power complex in Morocco, which combines solar and battery storage solutions. Additionally, ACWA Power is working on the Redstone Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project in South Africa, which will have a capacity of 100 MW and includes thermal storage to provide power even when the sun is not shining. The company also has projects in Saudi Arabia, including the largest solar power plant in the world, the 2.6 GW Al-Dhafra Solar Project.
