The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has partnered with ADNEC Group to provide 100% renewable and clean energy to the ADNEC Centre in Abu Dhabi, making it the first and largest events venue in the Middle East to be fully powered by clean energy. The agreement was signed at the ADNEC Centre by EWEC’s CEO, Othman Al Ali, and ADNEC Group’s Managing Director and CEO, Humaid Matar Al Dhaheri. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions from events held at the ADNEC Centre.
EWEC will supply ADNEC Centre’s power through renewable sources verified by Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), which certify that the energy consumed is generated from renewable sources. Acting as the Single Registrant and Auction Operator for these certificates, EWEC is supporting the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative.
Alongside this project, EWEC is leading other major clean energy initiatives across the UAE. The Noor Abu Dhabi Solar Plant, one of the largest single-site solar plants in the world located in Sweihan, Abu Dhabi, has a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW). It provides clean energy to approximately 90,000 homes in the UAE. Another project is the Al Dhafra Solar PV Project, which is set to be even larger than Noor Abu Dhabi, with a capacity of 2 GW. Al Dhafra will supply power to around 160,000 households.
Additionally, EWEC is developing the Taweelah Reverse Osmosis (RO) Desalination Plant, which is powered by renewable energy. Once completed, it will be the world’s largest RO desalination plant, providing up to 200 million gallons of water per day to support the UAE’s water needs while reducing energy intensity in water production.
