Italy based energy firm, Enel Green Power, a subsidiary of the Enel Group dedicated to renewable energy development worldwide, and Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) have jointly concluded three long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Air Liquide Large Industries South Africa (Air Liquide) and Sasol South Africa (Sasol) to supply 330 MW of renewable energy to Sasol’s Secunda site, which has the world’s largest oxygen production facility operated by Air Liquide.
This landmark agreement marks Enel Green Power RSA (EGP RSA) as one of the pioneering renewable energy companies to secure large-scale wind PPAs in South Africa’s Commercial and Industrial (C&I) market.
The 330 MW renewable energy will be generated by three wind projects located in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province and are projected to commence operations by 2026, contributing over 1,100 GWh annually. Notably, this cluster of wind projects expands Enel Green Power RSA’s existing platform of over 730 MW already in operation.
Moreover, it signifies the first project developed entirely under the joint venture between Enel Green Power and Qatar Investment Authority, highlighting their commitment to bolstering renewable energy infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This strategic partnership underscores Qatar Investment Authority’s dedication to facilitating the global transition to a low-carbon future. With such renewable energy projects, QIA aims to support sustainable development and reduce environmental impact. Additionally, the collaboration strengthens Enel Green Power’s position as a key renewable energy provider in South Africa, as the company continues discussions with other off-takers to expand its energy capacity. This strategic move solidifies Enel Green Power’s leadership in the renewable energy industry and reinforces its commitment to promoting sustainable practices on a global scale.
It can be said that such PPAs represents a significant milestone in advancing renewable energy adoption in South Africa’s industrial sector. By harnessing the power of wind energy, Enel Green Power and Qatar Investment Authority are contributing towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious energy landscape and moving to the broader goal of achieving a low-carbon future.
