Egypt’s leadership in solar and wind power generation within the Arab world is a significant milestone, reflecting its commitment to sustainable energy development. With a production capacity of 3.5 gigawatts, Egypt has surpassed other regional players like the United Arab Emirates (2.6 gigawatts), Morocco (1.9 gigawatts), Jordan (1.7 gigawatts), and Saudi Arabia (0.78 gigawatts). This was disclosed in a recent report by the Global Energy Monitor.
This accomplishment aligns with Egypt’s ambitious renewable energy targets, aiming to generate 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035. Ayman Haiba, head of the Sustainable Energy Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce and President of Sustainable Energy Development (SEDA) Egypt, emphasized Egypt’s determination to utilize clean energy sources to meet these goals.
The country’s renewable energy strategy encompasses various sources, including solar cells, wind energy, concentrated solar power, and hydropower. Several large-scale projects are underway to achieve these targets, such as the Khamsin Winds complex, which involves multiple wind farms developed by prominent companies like ACWA Power, Masdar, SCATEC, and Orascom.
SCATEC, in particular, is contributing significantly by constructing solar power stations and wind farms to power industrial facilities, such as the aluminum factory and green methanol production plant. Other companies like AlNowais Investment Company, ACWA Power, and Vestas Global are also actively involved in Egypt’s renewable energy sector through the establishment of solar and wind energy stations and farms.
The completion of 80% of the Benban solar power station underscores Egypt’s progress in large-scale renewable energy projects. Additionally, the presence of operational wind farms along the Red Sea coast, both government-owned and private-sector ventures, demonstrates Egypt’s commitment to diversifying its energy mix and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.
Overall, Egypt’s strides in renewable energy generation signal a positive shift towards sustainable development and energy security within the region.
