Egypt has set an ambitious target to substantially increase its renewable energy target to 60%, by the year 2030. As per Tarek El Molla, the country’s petroleum minister the nation has seen a notable jump from the existing goal of 42%.
As per reports, this significant enhancement in the renewable energy mix was unveiled during the Shaping a Pragmatic and Realistic Energy Future forum, where El Molla emphasized its integration into Egypt’s evolving energy strategy.
Furthermore, El Molla disclosed the launch of a national hydrogen strategy and the establishment of a governing body, the National Council, tasked with overseeing its utilization across various sectors. This strategic move underscores Egypt’s commitment to harnessing renewable resources and embracing innovative energy solutions.
The minister also underscored the potential for regional collaboration in advancing low-carbon energy initiatives. Egypt boasts a conducive environment for such endeavors, supported by existing infrastructure, logistics, pipelines, ports, and suitable areas for renewable energy projects. Additionally, Egypt possesses a wealth of skilled human resources and enjoys a strategic geographical position, amplifying opportunities for cooperation and mutual benefit.
El Molla highlighted the pivotal role of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) as a platform for integrating efforts and fostering collaboration among member nations. The forum serves as a conduit for leveraging existing solutions and catalyzing expanded cooperation in the energy sector.
Participating in the panel discussion alongside El Molla were prominent figures such as Lebanon’s energy minister Walid Fayad, Greece’s deputy minister for energy Alexandra Sdoukou, and EMGF’s secretary general Osama Mobarez. Their presence underscores the collective commitment to advancing sustainable energy practices and forging partnerships that transcend borders.
As Egypt charts its course towards a more sustainable energy future, these initiatives underscore its determination to reduce dependency on conventional energy sources and embrace renewable alternatives.
