The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has expressed its desire to work in Iraq and contribute towards supporting the RE sector and support other private sectors. This was discussed during Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein meeting with Odile Renaud-Basso, President of the EBRD at the Annual Meeting in Samarkand.
EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso said, “This is a very important moment for the Bank. Our distinct business model provides real added value, which can complement the work of existing development partners and accelerate the transition in sub-Saharan Africa and Iraq. This decision also reaffirms our shareholders’ commitment to the global development agenda.”
Further, in its statement, Minister Hussein stressed on the importance of partnering with the European Bank to support the Iraqi government’s plan to diversify the national economy, particularly investing in the energy sector and digital transformation of the financial infrastructure.
The meeting discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations between Iraq and the bank, with a focus on strengthening the private sector in Iraq and digitizing the banking system,informed the statement.
The dignitaries present during the meeting include, Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq in London, Mohammed Jafar Al-Sadr, Ambassador Haider Al-Adhari, Head of the European Department,Ghofran Kazem, Director General of the Public Debt Department at the Ministry of Finance, Kazuhiko Kogouchi, Secretary General of the EBRD, and Heike Harmgart, Executive Director of the bank.
