The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has granted a loan of up to $28.25 million to Jordan’s National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) to support its “Northern Green Electricity Transmission Project.” This project, which has a total value of $35 million, aims to expand the electricity grid in northern Jordan, enabling it to handle increased capacity from renewable energy sources. The goal is to accommodate both current and future renewable energy projects in the region.
The funding provided by EBRD will be utilized by NEPCO for the construction of high-voltage transmission lines. Specifically, the project will connect a new 400-kilovolt (kV) substation in the Rahab district of Mafraq governorate with two existing 400kV substations. One of these substations is located in Samra, in Zarqa governorate, and the other is situated in Western Amman. These connections are vital for strengthening the overall capacity and efficiency of Jordan’s power grid as it increasingly relies on renewable energy sources.
In addition to the 400kV lines, the loan will also finance the construction of two 132kV substations. These smaller substations will be established in key industrial and economic zones to meet the rising energy demand in these areas. One will be located in the Al-Hassan Industrial Zone, a major hub for manufacturing and production, and the other will be constructed in Jerash, further boosting grid connectivity and reliability in northern Jordan.
The Northern Green Electricity Transmission Project is part of Jordan’s broader strategy to increase its reliance on renewable energy, such as solar and wind power. This aligns with Jordan’s national energy policy, which aims to enhance energy security, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and promote sustainable development. NEPCO’s expansion of the grid is crucial to ensuring that renewable energy projects can deliver electricity efficiently to various parts of the country.
