In a landmark address at the CRU Wire and Cable Conference 2024 in Amsterdam, Charles Mellagui, CEO of Ducab Cables Business, outlined Ducab’s pivotal role in advancing global energy transition. With a legacy spanning 44 years in the UAE, Ducab has been a frontrunner in manufacturing cables and wires, crucial components for the energy sector.
Mellagui emphasized the urgent need for cleaner power generation, noting that traditional methods like coal and LNG remain major sources of carbon dioxide emissions. Despite recent gains in solar and wind power, these renewables account for only 13% of global energy production. Ducab, however, is actively involved in major renewable projects worldwide, including the Al Dhafra solar project, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, and the Hornsea One offshore wind farm in the UK.
“We are committed to making a significant impact in green energy,” Mellagui stated. Ducab’s efforts align with global trends towards sustainable energy solutions. Mellagui highlighted Ducab’s proactive role in influencing new government policies to bolster green energy initiatives, crucial for achieving global climate goals.
The UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050 aims to increase renewable energy’s share to 44% of the energy mix by 2050, backed by investments totaling Dh200 billion by 2030. This ambitious agenda is set to drive substantial demand for cables and related infrastructure.
Mellagui underscored the pivotal role of the cable industry in supporting energy transition, envisioning a future where cables will play a crucial role in expanding capacity, modernizing grids, and powering electric vehicles and data centers. Ducab is at the forefront of innovation, developing new types of cables to meet these evolving needs. Notably, Ducab operates its factory using energy from its own solar farm, exemplifying its commitment to sustainability.
With a strong environmental policy in place, Ducab aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and ensure that at least 50% of its product portfolio is environmentally friendly. Mellagui affirmed Ducab’s dedication to becoming a leader in sustainable practices, stating, “Ducab will transition from orange to green in every sense, contributing to the preservation of our planet.”
