DP World, a provider of port and logistics services, has partnered with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) to pioneer renewable energy solutions within its operations across the Middle East and Africa. The collaboration aims to research, develop, and implement renewable energy systems, particularly focusing on solar power and battery energy storage.
As per the three-years agreement, DP World and Masdar will work closely to identify suitable locations within DP World’s port operations for the deployment of renewable energy infrastructure. Their initial focus countries include Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and Egypt, where the companies will explore the feasibility of solar and energy storage installations.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, DP World’s Chairman and CEO, stressed on the significance of the partnership in advancing sustainable practices within the company’s port and terminal operations as he said “ By embracing renewable energy solutions, DP World aims to minimize its carbon footprint and foster positive change within the supply chain industry.”
Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, emphasized the joint commitment to decarbonize port operations and supply chains, recognizing the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources. Al Ramahi highlighted the urgency of action following the recent COP28 conference hosted in the UAE, stressing the need to triple renewable energy deployment by 2030 to mitigate climate change.
Furthermore, DP World’s efforts towards sustainability extend beyond the Middle East and Africa. In January, the company achieved a significant milestone by eliminating fossil fuels from its UK logistics hubs, such as London Gateway, demonstrating its dedication to fossil-free operations.
The collaboration between DP World and Masdar reflects the growing momentum towards sustainable practices within the global logistics and transportation industry. With the adoption of renewable energy technologies and the reduction of carbon emissions, the partnership aims to drive positive environmental impact and contribute to the global energy transition.
