Earlier this week, Dhofar announced four new environmental projects as part of its “Neutrality 3” program, an initiative in Oman’s National Programme for Carbon Neutrality. These projects focus on improving sustainability and addressing environmental challenges across the governorate.
Dhofar Municipality shared details of the first project, called “Green Belts,” which aims to expand green areas across Dhofar. This project will combat desertification and increase tree cover, particularly in regions facing severe land degradation. As part of Green Belts, Dhofar will establish two tree-lined areas in Dhalkut, create a baobab tree garden in Mirbat, plant a myrrh tree garden in Thumrait, and implement measures to protect existing perennial trees. This green corridor will extend from Rakhyut in the west to Mirbat in the east, supporting local biodiversity and soil preservation.
The second project agreement is focused on promoting electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Dhofar will initiate a trial phase for using electric cars and buses, encouraging cleaner transportation options among residents and reducing emissions from traditional vehicles. This phase is expected to start within the year, providing insights for wider implementation.
A third initiative aims to increase green spaces by an additional 2.4 million square meters. This will include planting over 40 billion seeds of pastoral herbs across 70 square kilometers. This large-scale planting effort targets absorbing approximately 56 tonnes of carbon dioxide, contributing to carbon reduction goals and enhancing local landscapes.
Dhofar also plans to enhance electronic services across the governorate. By digitizing services and processing more than 250,000 transactions electronically, the governorate aims to reduce emissions by an estimated 300 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
These four projects are part of Dhofar’s broader strategy to support carbon neutrality and foster environmental sustainability.
