The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) of Bahrain has released the bid prices for a new solar power project. The plant will be located at the University of Bahrain. It is planned to have a total installed capacity of at least 44 megawatt-peak (MWp).
Two companies shared their prices publicly. Almoayyed Solar Company offered BHD 9,146,271.200. TBEA Xinjiang Sunoasis Company Limited submitted a bid of BHD 12,032,902.105. These figures were revealed following a tender process that began in January 2025.
The new solar photovoltaic (SPV) project will generate around 75 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity each year. The solar panels will be installed on the campus of the University of Bahrain. The energy generated is expected to be used locally and will help reduce the university’s reliance on fossil fuels.
The project will follow a turnkey model. This means the selected company will be responsible for the entire process. This includes the engineering, design, supply of materials, construction, installation, testing, and commissioning. The project also covers civil and electromechanical work.
Nine companies submitted bids during the tender phase. The EWA is now reviewing these offers. Once selected, the winning bidder will begin work on the project.
This initiative is one of several smaller renewable energy projects being developed in Bahrain. Other efforts include solar panel installations at government schools, mosques, and public buildings.
For example, EWA has previously installed rooftop solar systems with smaller capacities—ranging between 100 kilowatts and 1 megawatt, on health centers and parking structures. These projects are part of broader efforts to increase the use of renewable energy across the country.
Bahrain has a national plan to reach 700 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2035. Projects like the University of Bahrain solar plant are steps toward meeting that target. The 44 MWp installation will represent a substantial share of current solar capacity in the country.
