The Electricity and Water Affairs Ministry in Bahrain, represented by Minister Yasser Humaidan, has entered into an agreement with Gulf Air Group (GFG), led by Chairman Khalid Hussain Taqi. The partnership establishes a framework to incorporate renewable energy solutions and improve energy efficiency in Gulf Air Group’s facilities and operations.
As part of the collaboration, the ministry will provide Gulf Air Group with technical expertise and consultancy services to support the integration of clean energy technologies. This effort is aligned with Bahrain’s National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP), which aims to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce energy consumption across various sectors.
The agreement also contributes to Bahrain’s wider sustainability objectives. These include reducing the kingdom’s carbon emissions by 30% by 2035 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. The partnership highlights a shared effort between government and private entities to advance renewable energy initiatives and improve energy practices in the country.
The country is also adopting rooftop solar systems in both residential and commercial buildings, facilitated by Bahrain’s Net Metering Policy, which allows solar energy producers to feed excess electricity back into the grid. Some of these installations include the University of Bahrain Rooftop Solar Project, which has an installed capacity of 500 kilowatts (kW). Furthermore, there is a Bahrain International Circuit Solar Project, which has an installed capacity of 3 megawatts (MW). The solar panels supply a portion of the energy used by the Formula 1 circuit and other facilities.
Additionally, Bahrain has introduced wind measurement stations to assess the potential for wind energy development in the country. These stations will help determine the feasibility of wind power projects in different regions.
The collaboration between the Electricity and Water Affairs Ministry and GFG highlights Bahrain’s push for public and private sector cooperation in renewable energy initiatives.
