Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced that its total installed power generation capacity from energy sources reached 16.779 gigawatts (GW) by the end of the third quarter of 2024. Of this, 17 percent of the total capacity came from clean energy sources. From January till September 2024, DEWA generated 45.14 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity, which represents a 5.49 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023. DEWA also reported achieving a summer gross heat rate of 7,923 British Thermal Units per kilowatt-hour (BTU/kWh), which it described as its best operational performance so far. DEWA continues to develop…

Dubai-based Grandweld Shipyards announced it will meet all its energy requirements using solar power by 2025. This will be achieved through its 1.3-megawatt (MW) rooftop solar project, which is currently under development. The company made the announcement in a press statement. The solar project consists of two phases. Phase 1, which is already operational, has a capacity of 569 kilowatts peak (kWp). It currently supplies 50% of the company’s energy needs. Phase 2, expected to be completed in 2024, will bring the total capacity of the project to 1.3 MW. Once fully operational, the project will enable the company to…
Procter & Gamble (P&G), a global consumer goods company, has signed a solar lease agreement with Yellow Door Energy. The project involves installing a 500kWp solar carport system at P&G’s office in Jebel Ali Freezone Authority (Jafza), Dubai. Yellow Door Energy will finance, design, construct, commission, operate, and maintain the solar carport during the lease term. The system will include over 870 bifacial solar panels, which capture sunlight from both sides to improve energy generation. The project will be carried out in four phases to match P&G’s operational schedule. A ceremony was held on December 16, with representatives from both…
Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Essmat, announced that the country has reduced fuel consumption from 182 grams per kilowatt-hour (g/kWh) to 171 g/kWh. This has resulted in monthly savings of 1.2 billion Egyptian pounds. Essmat delivered the announcement at the Energy Transformation and Sustainable Development Conference, representing Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. He said, “Egypt is working to expand renewable energy use and decrease reliance on fossil fuels.” The government aims to have renewable energy contribute 42% of the country’s energy mix by 2030 and 60% by 2040. This strategy includes integrating renewable energy and battery storage systems…
SolarWadi, a renewable energy developer in Oman, has partnered with Nafath Energy, an Omani EPC contractor, to construct a solar power plant at the Arab Open University (AOU) in Muscat. The agreement follows recent renewable energy developments in Oman, including the Ibri II Solar Project, with an installed capacity of 500 MW, and the Amin Solar Plant, which has a capacity of 105 MW. The solar power plant at the university is expected to generate more than 2 GWh of clean energy annually. This output will help reduce the university’s carbon emissions and decrease its dependence on traditional power sources.…
The President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, inaugurated the 500MW Zarafshan wind farm, the largest operational wind energy project in Central Asia. The project was developed by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar), a UAE-based renewable energy company. The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, as well as other senior officials from Uzbekistan and the UAE. The Zarafshan wind farm is part of Uzbekistan’s effort to expand its renewable energy capacity. Uzbekistan aims to reach 20GW of clean energy capacity by 2030. The…
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Oman, along with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals of Oman and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), organized the “Korea-Oman Renewable Energy Business Roundtable and Knowledge Sharing Programme (KSP) kick-off meeting” in Muscat last week. The event marked 50 years of diplomatic relations between Korea and Oman. It included over 70 government officials, business representatives, and experts from both countries to explore opportunities for cooperation in the renewable energy sector. Representatives from several Omani energy companies attended the meeting, including Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC), Nama Power and Water Procurement Company,…
AMEA Power has announced the commissioning of the 500MW Abydos Solar PV Plant in Egypt, Africa. The project is located in the Aswan Governorate and is one of the largest solar power plants in Africa. The inauguration ceremony took place last week with the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, and AMEA Power Chairman, Hussain Al Nowais, in attendance. The Abydos Solar PV Plant will produce approximately 1,500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually. This amount of energy is expected to supply power to around 300,000 households in Egypt. The plant is also projected to offset 782,300 tons…
Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed two agreements worth $600 million to develop a 500 megawatt (MW) wind energy project in the Gulf of Suez. The Egyptian cabinet announced the agreements in a statement on Saturday. The first agreement, named the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), involves the sale of electricity generated by the wind farm to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). The second agreement, called the Network Connection Contract, focuses on connecting the wind farm to Egypt’s national electricity grid. The wind farm will have an installed capacity of 500 MW. It will be located in…
The renewable energy sector saw rapid growth in 2023, with global jobs increasing from 13.7 million in 2022 to 16.2 million in 2023. This 18% rise, reported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), reflects growing efforts to expand renewable energy capacity. Over the past decade, jobs in this sector have more than doubled, as highlighted in the 2024 report by IRENA and ILO. The momentum to decarbonize energy systems has been reinforced by global calls, including those made during COP28, to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. If this goal is achieved, the…
