UAE-based renewable energy company AMEA Power has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and a Land Agreement for a 500-megawatt (MW) wind energy project in Egypt. The agreements were signed in December 2024 during the inauguration of the company’s 500MW Abydos Solar PV Plant.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior Egyptian officials, including Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, and Minister of Planning and Economic Development Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat. Representatives from AMEA Power and Egyptian energy authorities were also present, including Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power.
The PPA was signed by Engineer Mona Rezk Ibrahim Mohamed, Chairperson of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). The Land Agreement was signed by Dr. Mohammed Mostafa El-Khayat, Chairman of the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), and Aqueel Bohra, Chief Investment Officer of AMEA Power.
With the addition of this 500MW wind project, AMEA Power’s total renewable energy portfolio in Egypt now includes 2,500MW of solar and wind capacity. The company also announced that it manages 2,400 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery energy storage.
Egypt has been actively expanding its renewable energy sector with projects involving international partners. Beyond AMEA Power’s initiatives, Egypt hosts other solar and wind projects aimed at increasing clean energy generation. The Gulf of Suez wind projects, located near Ras Ghareb, include several developments with combined capacities exceeding 1,000MW. These projects are being developed by various global and regional companies.
Additionally, Egypt is pursuing renewable energy storage solutions, including pilot programs for integrating battery storage into its electricity grid. These efforts are part of Egypt’s broader transition to renewable energy sources.
