Algeria has started construction on an 80-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Bechar province. This project is part of a larger plan to build 15 solar power plants across 12 provinces, with a total installed capacity of 3,200 MW. Algerian Energy and Mines Minister Mohammed Arqab attended the launch of the first project.
The solar program will be executed in phases. It is designed to increase the share of renewable energy in Algeria’s electricity production. The new plants will contribute to the national grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Algeria has several renewable energy projects in different regions. The Hassi R’Mel hybrid power plant combines solar and gas energy and has a total capacity of 150 MW. The Touggourt Solar Power Plant, completed in 2023, has an installed capacity of 30 MW.
In addition to large projects, smaller renewable energy initiatives are being developed. The Algerian Space Agency has installed solar panels at remote monitoring stations to reduce diesel generator use. Several universities, including the University of Tlemcen and the University of Biskra, have introduced rooftop solar systems to supply clean energy to campus facilities.
The city of Ghardaia has launched a solar-powered street lighting project to reduce electricity consumption. Some agricultural farms in Ouargla have started using solar-powered irrigation systems to improve water efficiency.
The Ministry of Transport is testing solar panels on bus stops in Algiers. These installations provide lighting and power for digital displays. The National Railway Transport Company has also introduced solar-powered signal stations along railway lines in certain regions.
Algeria continues to develop solar and hybrid energy projects. The country is increasing renewable energy capacity through both large-scale plants and smaller local initiatives.
