ACWA Power, a private water desalination and renewable energy company, announced progress on several energy projects in Africa. Its Redstone Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant in South Africa has reached a production level of 50 MW and is expected to achieve its full 100 MW capacity soon. This plant is connected to South Africa’s national grid through ACWA Power’s collaboration with partners Herlogas and SEPCOIII. When fully operational, the Redstone CSP plant will provide clean energy to around 200,000 households.
In addition, ACWA Power’s Kom Ombo Photovoltaic (PV) plant in Egypt has reached its full production capacity of 200 MW. The Kom Ombo PV project now supplies renewable electricity to more than 200,000 households. These projects are part of ACWA Power’s broader efforts to increase renewable energy access across the African continent.
ACWA Power has invested around USD 7 billion in project costs across Africa. These projects include renewable energy generation, water desalination, and initiatives in green hydrogen. The company recently signed agreements with the governments of Egypt and Tunisia to develop green hydrogen projects, expanding its activities beyond power generation to support alternative energy sources on the continent.
Globally, ACWA Power operates a total portfolio of 65 GW. Its investments also include plans to produce green hydrogen at the NEOM Green Hydrogen Company in Saudi Arabia, with production expected by 2026. ACWA Power reports record-low costs in both power generation and water desalination, which supports the company’s goals of providing affordable water and energy solutions in various regions.
In 2023, ACWA Power announced plans to triple its business size, which includes expanding into more markets and supporting energy infrastructure. The company’s investments are intended to contribute to economic and social development through partnerships and sustainable infrastructure projects, especially in Africa.
