Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) has launched a new Green Bus service, marking an advancement in its Green Bus Programme. Starting September 12, these buses will run on Route 65, connecting Marina Mall with Shams Boutik on Al Reem Island.
The Green Bus service features buses powered by clean hydrogen and electric energy. This initiative is part of Abu Dhabi Mobility’s broader goal to convert Abu Dhabi Island into a green public transport zone by 2030.
The Green Bus Programme is a comprehensive effort to enhance public transport by integrating sustainable technologies. It aims to evaluate and implement the most effective hydrogen and electric power solutions for public transport. This involves working with international partners, including government bodies and bus manufacturers, to adapt these technologies to Abu Dhabi’s local environment.
Additionally, the programme focuses on building Emirati expertise in green transportation. It includes specialized training for bus operators and technicians in hydrogen and electric bus technologies, with practical training opportunities in South Korea and China.
Launched in November 2023, the Green Bus Programme will assess the performance of these new buses until June 2025. During this period, drivers and certified technicians will undergo both theoretical and hands-on training. This will ensure they are well-prepared for operating and maintaining the new green buses.
The programme is expected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Abu Dhabi. It is projected that annual emissions will drop by over 100,000 metric tonnes as the public bus fleet shifts from diesel to renewable energy sources.
The Green Bus Programme represents a key part of Abu Dhabi’s strategy to meet its climate goals, including its commitment to the Paris Agreement and its ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
