Women in Sustainability, Environment, and Renewable Energy (WiSER), a global platform founded by Masdar and the Zayed Sustainability Prize, has released a White Paper titled Igniting a Global Sustainable Economy. The paper highlights the role of women in climate action and offers recommendations on finance, AI, mentorship, and accessibility to support female entrepreneurs in renewable energy. The report is based on discussions from the 2025 WiSER Annual Forum, held during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).
Abu Dhabi continues to expand its renewable energy projects alongside these initiatives. The Al Dhafra Solar PV Plant, with a capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW), is one of the world’s largest single-site solar power plants. It supplies electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes. In addition to large projects, smaller renewable energy initiatives are also being developed.
A 50-megawatt (MW) floating solar farm is under construction at the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. It will generate electricity while preserving local biodiversity. A 25 MW rooftop solar project is being installed across several government buildings to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources. In Al Ain, a 15 MW agrivoltaic project combines solar panels with agricultural land to support food production while generating clean energy.
A 10 MW waste-to-energy facility in Mussafah is processing organic waste to produce electricity. A 5 MW hydrogen fuel cell project in Masdar City is supplying power to research facilities. A 3 MW off-grid solar system has been deployed in remote desert areas to provide electricity for water desalination units.
Abu Dhabi is also investing in renewable energy storage. A 100 MW battery storage system has been launched to support grid stability and balance solar energy supply. A 7 MW compressed air energy storage project is being tested to evaluate new ways of storing renewable electricity.
