The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) has signed an agreement with Ignite Energy Access to establish its global headquarters in Abu Dhabi. Ignite Energy Access develops and operates distributed solar solutions, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. The company plans to expand its operations and introduce its solar technologies in the UAE.
Ignite Energy Access will develop standalone off-grid solar projects in the capital city for rural communities, sustainable farming, and eco-friendly transport and construction. The company will also work with universities to support training and knowledge transfer programs.
Abu Dhabi has several renewable energy projects, including large solar plants and smaller-scale initiatives. The Noor Abu Dhabi Solar Plant has an installed capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW). The Al Dhafra Solar PV Plant, expected to produce 2 GW, is under construction.
Apart from these large projects, there are smaller renewable energy efforts. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has launched solar-powered irrigation systems in farms across the emirate. These systems help reduce water and electricity consumption.
Masdar City has installed rooftop solar panels on several buildings. These installations contribute to reducing grid electricity use in residential and commercial areas. The Capital city of UAE has introduced solar-powered streetlights in new residential developments. These lights reduce electricity demand and improve energy efficiency.
The AD Ports group is testing solar energy solutions at Khalifa Port. The project includes installing solar panels to power port operations and reduce emissions from logistics activities.
The Ignite Energy Access headquarters in Abu Dhabi is expected to create over 200 technology, finance, and supply chain jobs. The company will also work with renewable energy sector, including partnerships with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Masdar.
