Egypt Cement Group has decided to collaborate with Solarize Egypt to create a 40-megawatt solar power project. The initiative will use the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model to support the shift toward renewable energy in Egypt’s industrial sector.
The project involves an investment of EGP 1.5 billion. It will establish two solar power plants to supply clean energy to Egypt Cement Group’s factories located in Minya and Qena governorates. Each plant will produce 48 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually, totaling 96 million kWh per year. This will help reduce dependence on traditional energy sources and lower carbon emissions from the company’s operations.
The partnership supports Egypt’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes the transition to renewable energy to promote sustainable development. By adopting solar energy, Egypt Cement Group aims to reduce its environmental impact while enhancing energy efficiency in its industrial operations.
Eng. Yaseen Abdel Ghafar, CEO of Solarize Egypt, highlighted the project’s role in demonstrating how industrial partnerships can support renewable energy adoption. The collaboration aligns with national goals to expand clean energy use and integrate sustainable practices into heavy industries.
This project is part of Egypt’s broader efforts to increase reliance on renewable energy. Two recent solar projects in the country include the Kom Ombo Solar Plant and the Benban Solar Park. The Kom Ombo plant, with an installed capacity of 200 MW, is designed to provide electricity to approximately 130,000 households. The Benban Solar Park, one of the largest in the world, has a total installed capacity of 1,650 MW and supplies clean energy to millions of homes.
